Hek said that Meghalaya BJP must adopt a more focused approach to achieve meaningful gains
BJP National Executive Committee member and senior Meghalaya BJP Legislator Alexander Laloo Hek has categorically asserted that BJP should contest a sharply trimmed list of 15–20 seats, or at most 30 seats, in the coming Assembly elections 2028, calling it the most strategic and result-oriented roadmap for Meghalaya.
Positioning selective contestation as the party’s principal electoral doctrine, Hek said Meghalaya’s political landscape does not revolve around party strength alone but around candidate credibility and constituency-level appeal.
“Meghalaya is not completely based on political parties, it is based on the individual, based on the candidate,” Hek said, arguing that BJP must adopt a more focused approach to achieve meaningful gains.
Reiterating the formula he believes will deliver maximum gains, Hek stressed that State political environment is driven more by individual appeal than by organisational strength, and underscored that the party should adopt the Bihar model by prioritising the identification of strong, winnable candidates.
Hek urged both the state and national leadership not to spread the party thin across all 60 constituencies.
“We should not be contesting in all the 60 seats. We have to be very selective 15 or 20, or at most 30. Contesting every seat would make it difficult for BJP Meghalaya to concentrate strongly in each individual constituency,” said Hek.
He said that asharper, more disciplined contest strategy is the only way for the party to build real political traction in the state.
