Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the customs system needs big improvements so that people do not feel stressed while completing formalities. She explained that the same positive changes made in Income Tax should now be brought to customs.
She said “we need a complete overhaul of customs… we need to have customs simplified for people to feel that it is not cumbersome to comply… need to make it more transparent.”
The minister added that technology will be used more strongly to reduce extra official checks and speed up clearance of goods. She said that transparency and simple procedures will help remove unnecessary delays and confusion.
According to her, the aim is to create a customs system that works faster, smoother and with less human interference.
The government has already done reforms like GST simplification and income tax rationalisation in the current financial year. These reforms were made to increase money in the hands of people and boost spending.
Officials say that the customs overhaul India will follow the same path of reducing complications and giving people a better experience.
Nirmala Sitharaman also said that customs duty rates may be rationalised soon. She noted that the announcement about these new customs reforms may come in the upcoming Union Budget, scheduled to be presented on February 1.
