Goa night club fire: Goa Police said 4 tourists and 14 staff members have been confirmed to have died in the fire
At least 25 people were killed and over 50 injured in a devastating Goa night club fire in North Goa, police said on Sunday.
The fire was reportedly triggered around midnight after a a suspected cylinder blast at Birch by Romeo Lane club in Arpora village.
Four tourists and 14 staff members have been confirmed to have died in the fire while the identities of seven victims are yet to be established, Goa Police said.
“An unfortunate incident occurred in a restaurant-cum-club in Arpora. At 12.04 am, the police control room received information about a fire, and the police, fire brigade, and ambulances were rushed to the spot. The fire is now under control, and all the bodies have been recovered,” Goa Director General of Police (DGP) was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
“The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Police and fire department investigation is in progress. Legal action is being taken,” the police said.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the site late at night, took stock of the situation besides ordering a magisterial enquiry into the incident.
“I am deeply grieved and offer my heartfelt condolences to all the bereaved families in this hour of unimaginable loss.
I visited the incident site and have ordered an inquiry into this incident. The inquiry will examine the exact cause of the fire and whether fire safety norms and building rules were followed. Those found responsible will face most stringent action under the law- any negligence will be dealt with firmly,” he wrote on ‘X’.
“We will take action against both the club management and the officials who allowed it to operate despite flouting safety norms,” Sawant was quoted as saying nu India Today.
President Droupadi Murmu, meanwhile, expressed grief over the tragic fire and, in a post on ‘X’,conveyed her condolences to the bereaved families.
“Deeply pained by the tragic fire incident in North Goa district resulting in the loss of precious lives. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. May they find strength during this difficult time. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured,” the President said in a post.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences and also announced that an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF will be provided to the next of kin of each person who died in Goa mishap, while the injured will receive Rs 50,000.
“The fire mishap in Arpora, Goa is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. I have spoken to Goa CM Dr. Pramod Sawant Ji about the situation. The State Government is providing all possible assistance to those affected,” PM Modi wrote on ‘X’.
