KKR bring Andre Russell into a new role as Power Coach, using his big-hitting mindset to guide young finishers.
Andre Russell has started a new chapter with Kolkata Knight Riders after the franchise officially named him their power coach. This decision has surprised many fans, but the team believes Andre Russell is the perfect person for this special role.
His years of finishing matches, hitting long sixes, bowling fast spells, and saving runs in the field have all shaped him into one of the strongest T20 players in the world.
In a conversation with ESPNCricinfo, KKR CEO Venky Mysore explained how this idea came up when they were discussing what Russell could do after being released ahead of the mini auction.
Coaches had always asked Russell about his mindset in tense moments. He had once replied that when the team needed 15 to 16 runs per over, he stayed calm because he knew he could “clear the boundary at least twice an over.” Mysore said this kind of thinking is rare even among top finishers and became the foundation of the new role.
Mysore said that everything about Andre Russell’s game has always been about power. Whether it is hitting huge sixes, fast bowling or fielding near the ropes, Russell uses strength and confidence to change the match.
That is why Mysore told him they would call him the power coach. He said the name instantly made Russell smile, and it felt right for someone known for pure hitting power.
The new job is not only about technique. Mysore said the goal is to pass on Russell’s strong mindset to young KKR players who will learn how to stay relaxed and plan big chases under pressure.
With modern finishers like Tim David playing a similar style, Mysore believes Russell’s experience will help the next generation understand how to think in tough final overs.
Andre Russell has never worked as a coach before, but he is excited to learn from senior support staff like Abhishek Nayar, Dwayne Bravo, Shane Watson and Tim Southee.
Mysore shared that Russell wants to “be like a sponge,” taking in every bit of knowledge while also sharing what he has learned from years of T20 cricket.
Even though Andre Russell is now power coach, he is still free to play in different T20 leagues outside the Knight Riders group. KKR only needs to be sure there is no clash in schedules. So fans may continue to see him in leagues like CPL, MLC and ILT20.
