“It’s nothing new. They have been together already,” Mukul Sangma remarked, adding that such alliances reflect long-standing political collaborations in the Northeast
Former Meghalaya Chief Minister and TMC Legislature Party Leader, Dr Mukul Sangma has dismissed the recently proposed “One North East” initiative, calling it nothing more than a repackaging of existing political equations in the region.
Speaking to reporters, Dr Sangma emphasized that the proposed new regional configuration, which involves Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma of the NPP and TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, was not a novel development. “It’s nothing new. They have been together already,” he remarked, adding that such alliances reflect long-standing political collaborations in the Northeast.
Dr Mukul Sangma also took a strong stance against the current NPP-led Meghalaya government, asserting that it was “installed by BJP” and is therefore inherently aligned with the saffron party’s broader political framework. He stated that Pradyot’s political alignment is similarly connected to BJP, implying that the emerging regional bloc is essentially an extension of existing power structures.
While asserting his position outside the initiative, Dr Sangma hinted at a dynamic political future in the Northeast. “There will be many, many freelancers. The days ahead will speak for itself. Many surprises await the region for the good of our people,” he stated.
When questioned about any potential invitation to join the One North East initiative, Dr Sangma indicated that no invitation was extended, reinforcing his distance from the proposed political configuration.
Analysts suggest that Dr Sangma’s remarks are aimed at questioning the credibility of the new bloc while consolidating his own position as a key regional player outside BJP-led alignments.
