In a major boost for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Arunachal Pradesh, a large number of its candidates have been elected unopposed ahead of the December 15 municipal and panchayat elections in the state.
The early sweep has been hailed by Arunachal CM Pema Khandu as a “sweeping verdict” delivered even before polling begins.
Taking to X, Arunachal CM Khandu thanked the people of Arunachal Pradesh for their overwhelming support, noting that: 58 Zilla Parishad Members (ZPMs), 4 Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) corporators, and 5,037 Gram Panchayat Members (GPMs) have been elected unopposed in what he described as an “unprecedented mandate.” Arunachal CM said the results reflect the people’s strong trust in the BJP’s development-oriented governance.
Arunachal CM credited the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP National President J.P. Nadda, and State BJP President Kaling Moyong, saying their guidance continues to shape Arunachal Pradesh’s progress.
State BJP President Kaling Moyong, speaking on Monday, said public support for the BJP is evident across both rural and urban constituencies. He pointed out that nearly 65% of gram panchayat members,5,730 in total, have been elected unopposed, in addition to the 58 unopposed ZPMs, including 15 from Eastern Arunachal and 43 from Western Arunachal.
Moyong stated that the BJP is receiving “99.9%” support in the state, while the National People’s Party (NPP) has secured one unopposed ZPM. He further noted that four IMC seats have also gone to BJP candidates unopposed.
He urged all unopposed winners not to become complacent but to work with greater dedication for the people.
The State Election Commission (SEC) on Sunday confirmed that a total of 63 candidates have been elected unopposed:
* 58 BJP Zilla Parishad candidates
