Chennai has been placed under a red alert following heavy rainfall triggered by the deep depression, a remnent of Cyclone Ditwah
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai, in the wake of the cyclone Ditwah, has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over Chennai and Tiruvallur districts.
Chennai has been placed under a red alert following the deep depression, the remnant of the cyclonic storm, and triggering heavy rainfall in several districts of Tamil Nadu.
“The Deep Depression (Remnant of Cyclonic Storm Ditwah) over Westcentral and adjoining areas of Southwest Bay of Bengal and North Tamilnadu & South Andhra Pradesh coasts recurved slowly southwestwards with the speed of 3 kmph during past 6 hours, weakened into a Depression and lay centered at 0530 hrs IST of today, the 02nd December 2025 over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of Westcentral Bay of Bengal, North Tamilnadu, Puducherry & South Andhra Pradesh coasts, near latitude 12.9°N and longitude 80.5°E, about 40 km east-southeast of Chennai, 130 km northeast of Puducherry, 150 km north-northeast of Cuddalore and 180 km south-southeast of Nellore. The minimum distance of the Centre of the Depression from north Tamilnadu-Puducherry coasts is about 25 km,” Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, posted on ‘X’.
“It is very likely to continue to move slowly southwestwards towards the north Tamilnadu- Puducherry coasts and maintain its intensity of Depression during next 12 hours. Thereafter, while moving towards coast it is very likely to weaken into a Well Marked Low-Pressure Area during subsequent 12 hours,” the post further read.
Heavy showers had led to flooding in several parts of the city, especially North Chennai and surrounding districts with Chennai recording an average rainfall of around 10 cm between 8.30 am and 7.30 pm on Monday (Dec 1).
District authorities have ordered closure of all schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram on Tuesday.
People have also been advised to residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel until the weather improves.
